You know that using the right hashtags on Instagram can really make or break your discoverability, follower count and engagement rate, but how do you find the best ones? I’ll give you some tips in a moment.
First I just want to recommend that you make a list in Notepad on your phone with all the relevant hashtags. That way you can simply cut and paste when you post, and add or delete to preference for the individual post.
Don’t exaggerate the number of tags. 11-12 is probably about right. If you think the list of tags look ugly on your post, just add them in a comment immediately after posting. They will then be pushed down as new comments appear.
Here’s how you build that magic hashtag list:
Step 1: Open the Instagram app. Choose a “seed hashtag” like #jewellery, enter it into the search box and see what suggestions Instagram gives you (top line). Some of these may be good. Enter the good ones into your list.
Step 2: (Still in the Instagram app.) Enter a seed hashtag into the search box and check the pics out. Pick some good pictures and see what other hashtags they use on the same post. Enter the relevant ones you find into your list.
Step 3: Find a successful Instagrammer in your field and see what hashtags they use. Enter the good and relevant ones into your list.
Step 4: If your ideal client has a defining characteristic (like “mother” or “businesswoman”), enter “xxx on Instagram” into Google (substituting the characteristic for xxx, obviously). This should give you some key Instagrammers in the xxx niche. Check these out and see what hashtags they use. Copy the ones that are relevant into your list.
Step 5: Go to www.hashtagify.me and enter your seed hashtag. See what comes up. Pick one you hadn’t thought of yet and enter this as a new seed hashtag. Repeat as necessary. Enter the good hashtags you find into your list.
You will of course add and subtract from your list as time goes by.
Good luck with your Instagramming!
